I am looking for ideas to learn wordpress and themes. I know CSS and PHP, but I need to learn how to use them with wordpress. I have read a lot of the wordpress documentation, and googled for tutorials. I created a theme from one of the tutorials. I tried changing a lot of things to have the theme look different. I am sure there is an easier way. I am thinking of buying the dummies book and another themes book. There will be an updated dummies book next month.

Don’t laugh at this but another good way to learn WordPress is to answer a few questions here in the forum.

Looks like you know about the Codex, you’ve create a theme, you’re getting a book. Here’s a Codex link, just in case; Category:WordPress_Lessons

Might also join the wp-hackers and wp-testers email lists–see Mailing Lists.

Browsing the WordPress bug tracking is also a interesting way to keep up on the development and bug fixing–see https://trac.www.ads-software.com/ticket/7070

Conclusion–not sure there is an easier way!

Thanks for your ideas. I just subscribed to all of the mailing lists.
I found the book I needed at the library, “HTML & XHTML” (O’Reilly). My problem was not wordpress knowledge, but changes to HTML and XHTML, since I retired in 2000. I used to teach web design. Those changes were just being discussed when I retired.

I was a computer pioneer 50 years ago. My thesis was about the early hackers. I ended my career as dept chair of computer science for the last 5 years. I taught all of the languages and web design. I still maintain web sites for friends. I use native HTML.
