Hello! We’d like to know what you think of our new site. Last season’s was Joomla! powered, which proved to be overkill for what was needed, especially in the back-end with the non-techies.

Plugins of note: Bookmarkify, PageMash, Post Thumb Revisited, WP Contact Form III, WP Geo, WPLite and WP Page Numbers. We’ll also be using PodPress when it’s fixed.

There is a bit of ‘design-by-committee’ feel about it (I wanted seriffed fonts, they went for Arial) and has drawn on several influences, including the Natures Highlight theme, but the idea was to make more information available on the home page than on the previous site. There’s a custom home page which plls out the top three news story, another whcih shows recents results and match previews, and a third which pulls up the most recent blog/personal posts.

All the players and staff are registered as authors, but to be able to list authors who have not written anything I had to hack the core code. See https://www.opendesigns.org/forum/discussion/1532/wordpress-wplistauthors/. The changes are simple enough that they could be added to the core code (hint)…

The big gap on the right is for an advert which hasn’t arrived yet, and the menu will expand a bit next week when we get the new team photos and other downloads. The header uses Matt’s Random Image script, and there’s some custom code to make Meet the Players work. Blog posts can be commented upon (moderated), other posts cannot – fixed by an IF statement in the template file.

There’s things I’d like to improve, like the links to Google Maps, and the core hack is a nuisance, but would like to know what you all think…

    Gary

Many thanks. It seems to be being well received (though I am still being asked to make small changes to it). Should also have added that I’m using some FamFamFam Silk Icons, but not as many as I’d like!
