    I’ve used the gallery to put a portfolio together all works ok but when I click on the image I would like to open it in a lightbox rather than an empty page. How can I achieve this?

    This is not possible without a plugin at this type. The gallery section does not support a lightbox effect. There is a good chance that it will be added in the future, but I cannot give you any timelines on that.
