I override it with the plugin easyfancybox. That works perfectly.

@bastid – Although I find it interesting you were not able to see the bundled Lightbox Effects working I do appreciate your follow-up response with your solution to your customized setup.

    Thanks!

    Thanks for reply, Cais.

I still find it strange it is not working. I have two WP installations incl. nggallery on the same server, using almost the same plugins etc (one running on twenty twelve, the other one on twenty fourteen). After updating both to WP 3.9, on both installations lightbox effects were not working anymore. On one (the blog running on twenty twelve) I solved it by switching from “fancybox” the “shutter” and back again. But on my other blog (twenty fourteen), still none of the lightbox effects are working.

I haven’t changed anythings in the htmls, nor did I install any new plugin. I hope the issue gets solved by future updates, as I suppose there is some incompatibility…

@bastid – It does seem there is something more going on here … switching Lightbox Effects should not make any difference unless there is a conflict with another plugin providing the effect and switching effectively changed the order the site was reading the scripts in. Although I admit, that’s grasping at straws without more details about the sites in question.

Here is how I finally solved it: For some reason: stylesheet URL and javascript URL were linking to the wrong domain.

This is a very specific issue: I am customer of webhosting service all-inkl (Germany). Besides the specific domain name, website can be accessed also through cryptic URLs ending SUBDOMAIN.kassaserver.com. For some reason, with one of my WP installations this specific URL was used by Nextgen for linking to stylesheet and javascripts.

The problem occured when I switched servers at all-inkl.

Explanation might contain some impreciseness, but I am not a technical expert, just a blogger…
