Limit Daily orders per product not variation

We’d like to limit daily orders for any date (even an advance one) to 50 for now. We have set Maximum Order Deliveries per day (based on per order), and it works partially but when we tried to put through one order with more items than our test limit of 2 it still processed. How do we make it remove a date as a possibility based upon how many products are in your cart?
We are selling one product with 2 variations + some add ons, so the limit needs to be based on the main product regardless of which variations are chosen.
