    Hi,

I’m making an e-commerce website that offers product customization to customers. Depending on the limit on the number of variations that Woocommerce can handle (if any), I might have to reduce the number of attributes and/or sub-attributes accordingly. At this point, however, it could go up to 5,000 variations per single product. My questions are:

Would this many variations have any negative impact on the site?

Would it affect loading speed of that particular single product page on the front end?

Would it affect how quickly the website can retrieve data (e.g. available stock) that’s relevant to selected variation(s)?

How would this many variations affect my hosting environment/resources? (I need to know this so that I could check if my current hosting plan would be up to the task)

If 5,000 variations are considered to be too many, what should be the recommended amount of variations?

Thank you all in advance for your replies and insights.

    Best regards,

Yes it would slow the product page. Variations < 50 is ideal.

Also note, attributes cannot be nested.

If you need product customisation look at plugins:

    – Product addons
    – there are some product builders
    – bundles and composite products

    Hi Mike,

    Thanks for your reply.

I’m not sure what you mean by “nested”. Could you please elaborate?

    Thanks,

    John

Attributes are flat, you cannot have child-attributes of attributes.

Oh, my bad. “Sub-attributes” is a wrong word choice. What I meant was attribute configured terms (e.g. color >> red, green, blue).

Ok, thats fine. You can combine things like addons with variations just so you know.
