limit_content: what is the parameter measured in?

Hi, great plugin, does just what I’m looking for, but I’m having trouble with the “limit_content” parameter.

No matter what I set it to the result is not consistent accross all pages. It isn’t characters, and it isn’t words, at least not with my pages it isn’t.

So I’m just asking what it is supposed to be so that I have an idea of what I’m woirking with.
