Limiting My Blog Content

    Hi, I have WordPress 3.5.1 and using Buddypress Default Theme 1.6.4. Some of my blog content can run lengthy. I’m trying to find a way to limit the amount of characters for my blogs and allow a visitor to click a “read more” link but can’t seem to find how to do it with my theme. I noticed some themes have them. How can I do this without switching themes?
