• I just took over my own blog from someone else who was hosting and administering and I am overhauling it. I really don’t know much about this, except I posted to my WordPress blog for the past year.

It seems that I do not have any capability to use, create, manage or in any way work with Link Categories. I looked at the instructions on the WP site, and read through the WordPress 2 book, and everything indicates I should be able to do this. I was able to do it in the old WordPress version of my blog. But the option is just not there on my dashboard. Can anyone help with this. Thanks.

  • The Link Category functionality (most of it) is now embedded in the Template Tag, wp_list_bookmarks.

I have a server-installation; does what you say still apply?

    “I have a server-installation…”

If you mean something like a Fantastico install then if you are using Version 2.1 or higher then yes you can use wp_list_bookmarks.

I mean that my blog is not at wordpress.com; it’s hosted by Bluehost using WordPress as a platform. In the support book, many distinctions are made between the two kinds of accounts/installations. Bookmarks seem to be something used only in the wordpress.com accounts.

Is there no way to do this through the user-friendly dashboard? Do I need to go in and do any link categorizing through code? (I don’t know HTML; I’m just a writer!)

Not sure about the 2 different types of installs at Bluehost but wp_list_bookmarks is available from the www.ads-software.com (not COM) version of WordPress.

Sorry if I wasn’t clear. There are not two types of Bluehost installs. I was referring to the differences between a blog on the WordPress.com server and a blog using WordPress but installed on another server. I have the latter; that server is Bluehost.

I know this is probably just my own ignorance, but “wp_list_bookmarks is available from the www.ads-software.com (not COM) version of WordPress” is little better than Greek to me. Are you referring to some plugin I need in order to do links categories? And again, why does this option not appear on the WordPress dashboard, especially when the instructions everywhere I look indicate that it should? I used to be able to do this before I overhauled the blog, but now it’s just not there.

Michael, I can certainly start using the new template tag, but how do I assign categories to the links/bookmarks in the first place? Is my only option to manually edit the link records in my database?
