Hi there, I’m feeling stupid for asking this, as I’m sure there’s a simple solution that I’m missing.

I’ve created a custom category using your plugin (Custom fields > Categories), but cannot see where to connect to this when creating a new field within my ACF field group.

Within my field group, from the “Field type” drop-down, I can see three “taxonomy” options in the “Relational” section:

Taxonomy – this appears to only show WordPress categories
Taxonomies – seems to do the same as above
Taxonomy terms – this seems to be what I want, as I can then select what category I want to use, but again it only shows me WordPress categories, and not custom categories.

I’m hoping you or someone else can help with this, as it’s got me stumped.

As an FYI, I am wanting to show a drop-down list of the custom categories within my post edit page.

    Thanks!

    Hello!

Thanks for the feedback. I think you’re misinterpreting the “Custom Fields > Categories” usage. This taxonomy has been added in ACF Extended to let you organize your Field Groups, and isn’t intended to be used or retrieved with actual Custom Fields (it is for internal use only) as the “Public” setting has been disabled to avoid any Rewrite Rules from being generated.

If you want to create your own Custom Taxonomy, you can use the “ACF Extended: Dynamic Taxonomy” module, in the Menu “Tools > Taxonomies”. The taxonomies created from there can then be retrieved using Custom Fields, as long as you’ve keep the “Publicly queryable” setting enabled.

Note: There’s a difference between “Taxonomy” & “Taxonomies” fields.

The “Taxonomy” field is a native ACF field, that let the user choose terms from a specific Taxonomy defined in the Field Administration.

The “Taxonomies” field is a ACF Extended field, that let the user choose a taxonomy from the one allowed in the Field Administration.

    Hope it helps!

    Regards.

Sorry, but could you point me to some documenation on how to set the custom taxonomies up please? Basically, As an example, a taxonomy called “Colours”, and then a hierarchical list of colours (red, blue, green, etc.).

I can set up a single taxonomy in “Tools > Taxonomies”, but cannot see where to add the sub-level items to this.

Thanks again for you help – I’m only just getting back into WP after a few years off, and things are still a bit rusty, haha.

Sorry for spamming you, but managed to figure it out. I was expecting to be able to do it all from the “Tools > Taxonomies” area, but realise I add the sub-level items from the post admin page. Thanks!

    Hello,

Yes, you were confusing “Taxonomies” & “Terms”. Here are some useful articles about that topic:
