• OK, I was someone who was having HUGE problems with Gutenberg.

The main reason was that I was trying to work with Gutenberg editing already existing pages. Nowhere did I see documentation that this was a pathway to frustration and failure. Gutenberg only works with newly created pages.

It would’ve been SO HELPFUL and saved me a lot of lost production time if this had been made clear upfront.

Now that I’ve gotten over that hurdle, I’m trying, like a good little WordPresser, to use Gutenberg and I’ve run into another problem.

When I style a link with italics for the name of a publication followed by normal type for the date, like The New York Times, April 19, 2018 the link splits. Both the pub name and the date separately highlight and link to the source page. Both links work but this separation never happened before Gutenberg.

Is this a bug or a feature? Why can’t both the italicized and the non-italicized copy remain a single link?

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

  • I just looked at the raw html for that link it is pretty weird in a harmless way in this instance to build two anchored links based on the boundary.

Thanks so much for your review of the code. Obviously, this is not a huge problem, but is there a fix I can apply by changing something in the Code Editor? I’m not familiar with the term boundary.

    Thanks again!

premiumblend: I was playing around with this and saw that it did exactly what you described. I can’t answer your question about whether or not it’s a bug but I did find this workaround:

    1. Type the text, for example: The New York Times, April 19, 2018
    2. Select that whole phrase and create the link
    3. Now go back and italicize just “The New York Times” — since it’s all the way to the left margin, position the cursor just before “The” then hold down the shift key while using the right arrow key to highlight each letter in “The New York Times”
    4. Hit the Italic button or CTRL-I (CMD-I if you’re on a Mac)

When I did it that way instead of italicizing “The New York Times” before creating the link, I got only one link and it looks okay when I preview it in a draft post.

Maybe that will help a little for now….

Thank you SO MUCH! I will follow your advice. People who use WordPress are just the best people, IMO.

I really appreciate your taking the time to help me!

You’re very welcomed, glad you found the workaround useful.

    Have a great holiday!
