I’ve just posted on my blog and am using Facebook plugin to publish to my fan page. The posting I made created a link on the page which lacks the thumbnail (featured image) and excerpt. Instead, it looks rather uninviting like this:

Occasionally I see this when sharing links manually on Facebook too: sometimes the thumbnail appears, sometimes not. What is going on here?

    Thanks,
    Graham

Try running your affected URLs through the Facebook Debugger.

If you pass the URL you used as an example above the debugger notes “Provided og:image is not big enough”

Thanks for the reply. The image is bigger than the minimum 200×200 that the debugger specifies and it’s about twice the size of the thumbnail icon Facebook generated when I shared it on my profile. Why does Facebook require such a big thumbnail?

Also, would that explain why the excerpt is missing too?

    Thanks,
    Graham
