I have been running the blog for over 4 years. I have not added any plugins, or edited any of the WordPress files for months.

For the last couple of days when I click on my link that should take me to the Dashboard, I get a welcome page that you should get when first installing WordPress. When I try to access the blog to view it, I get an error telling the the page can’t be loaded or at times I’ll gat a page not found error. The problems will continue for a few minutes and then go away for a while. Things will operate normally for a while and then suddenly they will return.

I’m sure that my readers are having the same problem when they try to visit my site — the traffic logs show that the daily traffic is about half of what it should be. I need to isolate what is creating the problem and then fix it.

I’ve tried everything I can think of and REALLY would appreciate any thougghts and suggestions.

  • Try re-uploading the wp-admin and wp-includes folders.

Will it be safe to use the files that come with the install files? I’m assuming that I can download them and then ftp them to my server. Will this delete any critical information or are the two files just program files?

Yes – it’s perfectly safe as long as you don’t over-write the wp-content folder or your wp-config.php file. And yes – you need to use FTP.

Your site’s content is stored in your database – not in any of the files within wp-admin or wp-includes.

or are the two files just program files?

They’re folders containing core WP program files. You need to upload the entire folder in each case.

Thanks! I’ll re-upload the folders. I’ll give an up-date tomorrow.

When I started the file transfer I discovered that there was a folder in my wordpress folded called wordpress. This folder appears to be a duplicate folder containing everything that should be in the wordpress folder. I’ve re-named it “wordpress_bac” before I deleted it to insure that there isn’t anything in it that I want/need. I’ve also re-uploaded the two folders you suggested. We’ll see what happens next.

That seems to have resolved the problem! Thanks — I really appreciate your help.

During the last few weeks the problem still occurs. I’ve confirmed that I have replaced the files. Is anyone else having this problem?
