BTW, I found section in the docs that I don’t entirely understand, it’s “Download Files Not Protected on NGINX”. Simple online scanner shows for that website that it runs on OpenResty. Could it be the reason for that problem?

That is the one however I can’t see the full path in the screenshot. Can you copy the File URL and paste it here but remove the file name from the URL at the end.

Link was picked up by Google Search, I guess, because during transition period new hosting asked to deactivate all the plugins and my friend didn’t do everything fast enough and GoogleBot indexed the file.

Thanks for that. So the link you have now is not one that is created by EDD.
If you click on the Upload File link in that box then you upload your file it will be added to a wp-content/uploads/edd/ directory which is protected via .htaccess and direct access to it will be restricted.

Try uploading a file like that and see if the path afterwards look correct: uploads/edd/…./

?? I’ve just found it myself and was about to post it – after your question I compared the link with her “free sample” thing and found the difference.

So, do I get it right, to correct the problem on existing page I should:
1. open existing page
2. go to the section with download file
3. upload file from that section rather then upload to the media library first

I suspect that it was exactly how it happened, she tried it with free sample, everything was honky-dory, then she kind of forgot how she uploaded or didn’t think it should be done only through download section on the page.

Yes, that is correct. You need to upload the files from the File URL -> Upload a file link as that will make sure to upload the files in the secure /edd/ directory on your webserver.

Once the file is uploaded and inserted in the field you could copy that link and try opening it in a different browser to see if its correctly blocking you from downloading it.

Now I’ve got the problem with google :(. I removed old file, but google is still letting me download from the SERP the fil under old address… I might blame it on my browser cash, but it feels like an actual download (and yes, she doesn’t have a cash plugin, maybe the hosting do some cashing?!?).

You can simply delete that old file from your WordPress website. Go to the Media page and you can delete the file there.

You can double-check afterwards via FTP to make sure the file no longer exists at wp-content/uploads/2019/07/filenamehere

I’ve already done it, wrote in previous message. That’s why I’m so puzzled.

Finally it disappeared. So it was cashed somewhere, more likely at the hosting (I do another site with different hosting, and over there files are not accessible as son as I delete them).
