    When an editor creates a new page or post and inserts a link to a post that is under a restricted category, the visitor is redirected to the homepage without any message or prompt to login. Is a prompt to login possible?

    While it is not possible to specifically add a prompt, you can control what page unauthorized users should be redirected to. I recommend redirecting to a Login page and using the [login-form] shortcode on that page. Using that form will also ensure users are redirected back to the page they came from after logging in.
