    Good morning

I am after a plugin solution which enables stock level control where a ‘simple product’ is made up of several other ‘simple products’ – i.e. components.

Should one of the components go out of stock then then all products which require that simple product should also be indicated as ‘out of stock’.

I am sure there must be a solution but I cannot find the right wording to reveal one.

  • Hey there, @cheerychops! Thanks for contacting us. I’m happy to help you.

Do you mind sharing more details about the product so we can get a better understanding of your goal?

    • You mentioned the product is made out of several products. But can the products be purchased separately or only together?
    • Can the customer purchase only some of the products or do they have to purchase them all together always?
    • The more information you can share, the better.

    Looking forward to your reply.

    Have a wonderful day!

    Good morning

    Thank you for replying.

    In more detail

    1. Yes, the products can be purchased separately.
    2. These ‘component’ products can be purchased individually in the same way as any simple product can be purchased.

The scenario is this. A model locomotive kit is composed of simple products, for example wheels, chimney, cab etc. It is quite possible that a locomotive kit could also be a variable product containing different formations of exterior features (e.g. chimney styles) suitable for different periods during its operational period.

However, if one component is not in stock the kit (or variant thereof) is not available.

For a locomotive kit, the inventory is = 1 if only if all components are available. The kit is made up ‘just in time’ for delivery. What we want to avoid is that a locomotive kit is ordered only to find that, for example, the wheel set required is ‘out of stock’.

It is quite possible that a chimney is ordered separately for a customer’s project. (Point 2 above)

What I am looking for is a (hopefully) free stock/inventory plug-in which allow ‘dependent’ components to be added to another product, and if a necessary kit component is missing then to automatically register the kit (or variant) as out of stock.

Additional functionality might be to indicate the missing component and raise an alert for the shop staff.

I hope this provides the detail you asked for.

    Kind regards

    Thank you for the explanation!

Have you checked the grouped products option?

This is a default option on WooCommerce where you can group different products, so you could create the locomotive kit with the separate products. And if one of the products is out of stock it will add a notice on the grouped product.

    Here’s a screenshot:

This is a grouped product on my site made of the Hoodie, Beanie, and Shirt, which can all be purchased separately or grouped like this.

I changed the Tshirt stock to zero and now, on the grouped product, it shows that the Tshirt cannot be purchased as part of this group.

This does allow the customer to purchase the other items.

Do you think this is a good fit for you?

You can find more about this in this guide.

If you don’t think this is a good fit, let us know and we’ll look for another option for you.

    Looking forward to your reply.

    Have a wonderful day!
