Linking direction to a tab – how to actually do it?

There have been several posts here asking how to link directly to a tab (so when the page is loaded the correct tab is displayed) but none of them have an actual solution (even the resolved thread has no solution!)
Can some one shed some light on how to actually link to a tab???
