This is a reopening of this post, which was marked as resolved due to my failure to reply to requests for further information. Its title was, “linkroll displays too much”.

    I originally wrote,

I am using the Creativeily theme and WP 6.2.2

I have a linkroll widget which displays rather than hides the priority and the tooltip text.

When I enter the editor it allows me to make the changes but saves the linkroll with the displays on. This may be an error in the widget editor.

    What more do you need?

You wrote, “From what I understand, it appears the issue doesn’t look like it is from Jetpack, but just to be sure, could you please help me understand if there is any point where you think Jetpack is creating the problem?”

    My reply is,

The reason I think it’s jet pack is that when I use the link roll widget editor, I uncheck the “link description” and “link rating” check boxes, press “update” and yet when I look at the page, the description and rating remain displayed.

When I refresh the widget editor page after the update, the description and rating are reset as checked and to be displayed.

In my case, the widget editor which I believe to be a Jetpack component is failing to persist its updates.

    The page HTML is

    <li style="opacity: 1;">

    ? ? <a title="My notes on using Creativeily, this theme">

? ? ? ? <img src="https://davelevy.info/wiki/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/C.png" alt="About Creativeily My notes on using Creativeily, this theme" title="My notes on using Creativeily, this theme">About Creativeily
    ? ? </a>
? ? My notes on using Creativeily, this theme 0
    </li>

Thus showing that html is generated to display the unwanted content.

The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

Hi @dfl1955, could you share a screenshot of the linkroll that you’re referring to?

Jetpack doesn’t have a linkroll option, but it has a Blogroll block, launched in beta mode (since Jeptack 12.7).

Thank you, here is the displayed html,

and here is the editor display screen,

I am using firefox on w11.

I note that this is a legacy widget; when I try to load the ‘blogroll beta’ I get an error with the message, “Whoops, we have encountered an error. Please try again later.”

Do I need the Classic Widgets plugin?

Hi @dfl1955, I took another look and tested with the theme Creativeily, however it doesn’t look like that the Links widget you’re using is from Jetpack.

If you search the widgets, the ones from Jetpack will show either in green or with “(Jetpack)” in the name.
The closest I found was the RSS Links (Jetpack).

Another way you can test is to turn off Jetpack, if the Links widget is still there, then it means it doesn’t belong to Jetpack.

You mentioned the site running on WordPress 6.2.2, could you try upgrading it to the latest version 6.4.1, and see if it helps?

when I try to load the ‘blogroll beta’ I get an error with the message, “Whoops, we have encountered an error. Please try again later.”

Could you try disabling all the other plugins except for Jetpack, then ad thed Blogroll widget again? I tested on my site with Creativeily active, and it added fine.

Thank you for this, I will try what you suggest. Please do not close this yet.

The widget is called “Links”; it is not a jetpack widget.

I have installed “Classic Widgets” and the page now behaves as expected. i.e. the two properties i.e. “show link description” & “show link ratings” when unset are presumably written to the persistent store and the page renders as expected.

The jetpack “blogroll” widget still displays an error as described above. I have 37 active plugins. This blog is a personal blog and I don’t have the time to remove them one at a time to discover the conflicting plugin, if there is one as I now have a usable work-a-round.

I believe that this is a bug in block editor, because disabling it for widgets has seemingly resolved my problem. Can you raise it in the appropriate place?

    Hi @dfl1955

Thanks for the additional reporting. I am glad that the issue with the Links widget seems to be resolved.

Regarding the issue with the Blogroll block, as a first step, I noticed that the connection between Jetpack and your site is broken.

For Jetpack to work, we need a working connection between your site and WordPress.com.

Would you please delete Jetpack and then reinstall it as a first step here? You can follow these steps to do that:

    1. Start at PluginsInstalled Plugins.
    2. If Jetpack is currently active, click Deactivate to disable it. Then click Delete to remove it from your site:
    3. Go to Plugins  → Add New.
    4. Search for “Jetpack – WP Security, Backup, Speed, & Growth”.
    5. Click Install and then Activate.

When Jetpack is installed, click the green Set up Jetpack button to reconnect.

This handy guide explains that process in more detail:

    https://jetpack.com/support/reconnecting-reinstalling-jetpack/#reinstalling-jetpack

You shouldn’t lose any settings or any of your stats or subscribers in doing so, as that info is stored in our system here.

Once you have done that, please let us know, and we can test the connection. Once we have a working connection, we can then move on to troubleshooting the Blogroll widget.

    Hey there, @dfl1955,

Do you have updates about that? We usually close inactive threads after one week of no movement, but we want to make sure we’re all set before marking it as solved. Thanks!

    This is quite odd.

    1. I had noticed that Jetpack would not connect but did not/could see any adverse errors and so did not report or remediate it.
    2. I have removed and reinstalled Jetpack and I believe it has been correctly installed and is now connected.
    3. I deactivated “Classic Widget” and checked the legacy linkroll widget, which reports the display properties as I expected and the html renders correctly. This implies that in the previous state, the linkroll widget could not persist the properties if they were changed.
    4. I can install the Blogroll widget i.e. no error messages and it seems to render correctly on the HTML page. Can you point me at how to create a list of sites for the Blogroll widget, my brief experiments suggest it will only link to the blog at its top level, and not articles. (I have cut and paste URL’s into the widget.) The site is currently displaying the blogroll widget @ https://davelevy.info/wiki. This does not do what I want, and since it’s beta I will happily document why if you could point me at the correct team/address.

Thank you for keeping this open beyond your normal practice.

Hi @dfl1955, the way you’re doing it sounds correct, and the Blogroll block will effectively only display top level info of the blogs.
Here’s more info on using the Blogroll block: https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/blogroll-block/

If you want to show articles from recommended blogs, then you might be best served with the RSS block which is a default in the WordPress editor. You’d need to add one RSS block for each blog. Can you try and see if it’s closer to what you’re looking for?
