Links in twenty-ten theme don't work; can't log in to administration panel

Having looked into it a little more, while this works for my current test page, it is potentially dangerous for other code. The * { z-index: -3; } resets the z-index of everything to -3, which could mess up other HTML/CSS.
As an aside, the ‘hard reset’ method of *{ margin:0; padding:0; } has come under criticism. See:

So, I think we’re on the right path, but need to find a more focused z-index solution.

Yes and maybe you need to pad the covering item to not cover. Now I dont remember what was covering your links.

If I did remember it correct then your photo was covering the link.
Now I don′t know what covered but if I remeber correct it was covered by a photo.
Maybe you should try calling the photo direct from the css file.

something like!

.supersized {
background: url(./your Direction/filename.xxx or whatever ending you use for the picture ) no-repeat 0px -0.4em;
}
