links not working after chaning permalinks

i’m new to blogs. i’m using wp 1.5

i changed the permalinks to:/%category%

it said to update my .htacess file. i didn’t see one on my server, so i created a notepad document with that name and pasted the rewrite rules. then uploaded it into my /blog directory.

now my links can’t be found. am i supposed to do something else. please help me out.

i don’t understand this: Change File Permissions: You must chmod the .htaccess file to 666
