Links not working – blank page with ‘x’

Both internal and external links do not work (including regular and Main Menu links). There is no error message – just a blank page with ‘x’ in upper right corner. Can’t go back to the previous page either – looks like the site is frozen. But can access the pages directly, just not through links.

I hadn’t touched WordPress backend for awhile and discovered from user feedback. I’ve looked at forums and tried deactivating/reactiving all plugins as suggested.
