• I have a couple of sites. Sometime I post a link without turning it into a link if you see what I mean. I just paste the text in there, the URL, but i don’t go through the wordpress ‘insert link’ routine.

and that link opens to the webpage linked to.

I like that sometimes. Makes more immediate appeal to the page, you can see what it is about.

Other times I prefer the link to be an ‘unopened’ link that needs to be clicked on – when I want to paste a number of them, say.

Right now I never know what’s going to happen.
It might be a difference in configuration between my sites, I don’t know.

Could someone instruct me on what I need to know in order to take control of this aspect.

The link I’ve just provided of the ‘page I need help with’ is an example of when I’d like it to open automatically.

The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

  • I guess you don’t mean that links open automatically but that links you have in texts are linked automatically? As far as I can see, you seem to be using Gutenberg as your editor. Gutenberg recognises links based on their URL structure and then links them automatically.

I am not aware of any way to prevent this. WordPress tries to help the editor here – so that you don’t have to set the link yourself.

I don’t know that I’m putting it too clearly. What I’m talking about is that sometimes a sort of intro page opens that shows people what it is all about – but still needs to be clicked on to get there.
Other times the link simply remains there as a link needing to be click on.
I am trying to understand and control that behaviour.
I thought for a while it was because of configurational differences across my sites but I’ve got a couple of examples here, one each way, both from the same site:

    did
    https://dhawcroft.com/?p=997

    didn't
    https://dhawcroft.com/?p=973

You mean the preview of a link that is generated at https://dhawcroft.com/?p=997? That’s what happens there because you have deposited the link with an embedded block in Gutenberg. You can read more about this here: https://www.ads-software.com/support/article/embeds/

On the second page, you have simply deposited the link as a link. Therefore, it is not embedded and the preview does not appear.
