• Hello,

I’m having an issue with an ad I placed on my site. The company who made it says it opens in a new tab but it does not on my site. They say I need to change the settings on my website. I can’t find a setting for Links. I simply choose if I want them to open in a new tab or not when I make them.

It’s the second ad in the rotation.

    Cheers,

    Craig

  • I am unsure what the 2nd ad should be. The slider moves all the time and in the source code all entries in this ad are present multiple times (for the animation).

However, I see different information about the target on the link for each ad. Sometimes nothing, sometimes “_top” (i.e. same window), sometimes “_blank” (i.e. new window) …

It should be noted that the information is generally only a recommendation. Some browsers (like mine) ignore this information. It must be up to the visitor to decide where to open links. And yes, as a website operator this may seem strange, but with something like this you are patronizing your visitors. I would recommend doing without such information these days, especially as it is also against accessibility (which is already regulated by law in some countries …). But of course it’s absolutely your decision as a website operator ??

I also see that you are apparently using the paid plugin “The Ad Slider Plugin” for these ads. I would recommend that you contact their support with your request: https://wpadvancedads.com/support/ – questions about commercial plugins cannot be answered here in the forum.

I don’t pay for that app so it just directs me back here for help.

The ad in question is the 2024 MTB Shoutout one, it’s one of the ones with “_top”.

“I would recommend doing without such information” what information?

The plugin that sets some of the slider’s styles is called “advanced-ads-slider”. It is not available in the WordPress repository: https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/advanced-ads-slider/ – but it is available as paid plugin at the above link.

Since I am unfamiliar with the slider, I cannot tell you how you can set the target attribute for the individual entries there. Or do you know which component (plugin or theme) provides the slider for you? Then contact their support. It is not a WordPress-specific slider.

According to accessibility guidelines, users should be informed that this is happening before a link opens in a new window. This can be done with text in the link (“opens in new window”) or an aria label. If you are interested in this, take a look at some things about accessibility. Your theme and all the plugins you use would have to support this if you want to go down this route. But as I said, it has little to do with your actual question.

Sorry, at a quick glance I thought they were the same. Thanks!
