links-update-xml causing slowness

I’ve noticed a big performance increase since I set up a cron job to run links-update-xml.php. I think the alternate means of running it are only for those who can’t use cron.

Where is that line? And in which file?

Can someone post an example of the cron job?

heh, thanks, I know how to set up cron jobs, just not sure what the job should be doing. Is it simply wgetting the links-update-xml.php file?

Note: https://www.weblogs.com/changes.xml (and consequently https://static.www.ads-software.com/changes.xml) has been flaky lately, exacerbating performance problems.

Oh! So if the changes.xml files don’t work, then nothing will load? That’s the conclusion I’m drawing from it, since disabling the plugin puts everything back to normal.

lambic: The Update Linkroll plugin does that for you without having to edit the index.php file. Then, if the changes.xml file goes down, go into wp-admin and disable the plugin until things go back to normal.

I guess if I use the plugin, I won’t need to run the cron job, correct? If all of this is correct, I’ll write a post to elaborate to the best of my knowledge.

No you won’t, but the plug-in will slow down your site (that is, it seemed to slow mine down).

The plugin runs links-update-xml.php every time someone hits your page so you’re running it more often than you need to if you have a lot of traffic (or not often enough to catch the updates if you don’t have a lot of traffic).

Ah, gotcha. So in the case that weblogs.com isn’t functioning properly, what do we do?

I have no idea. I think https://blo.gs has some kind of updated blogs list, but I don’t know how you’d use it. Blogger has one (https://www.blogger.com/changes.xml) but I think it’s only for Blogspot blogs.

It would be great if pingomatic ran one since WordPress pings “pingomatically”.
