Hi, I’ve been finding Wordfence (Free) incredibly helpful in dealing with attempted spam registrations but something I’ve noticed is that any time a user registers with a gmail.com account, I don’t see any traffic relating to the attempted registration and so I can’t use the tools to block that IP from the site. No visits to the signin or signup pages for example.

I’m trying to understand what’s causing this and what I can do to see where those registrations are coming from because they’re by far the most numerous that I’m seeing. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi @yotaka, thanks for getting in touch.

For my clarification, are you seeing the registrations for Gmail because they’re actually coming through email to you as successful, then there’s no corresponding Live Traffic for that timestamp? Also, are you using any sort of membership/ecommerce plugins that might bypass the usual WordPress registration page?

Even though registration may be considered “security”, do you have the toggle set to “ALL TRAFFIC” in the Wordfence > Tools > Live Traffic page? If not, it might be worth spending a period of time logging this to see if the registration events are caught that way.

    Thanks,

    Peter.

I do have it set to log All Traffic, with a combination of WP Approve User installed (so registrations aren’t a direct security risk) and WPForo which is where the registrations all come from.

However, while I was looking at a batch of new registrations that came in this morning I saw that there _was_ activity on the signing page that Wordfence did track, I just wasn’t seeing what almost all my registrations seem to do (attempt to log in immediately) which stands out more in the log. So it appears to be the behavior of the bots and my not noticing it before rather than a Wordfence issue. Thanks for the reply and sorry for wasting time with what looks like a PEBKAC issue.

    Hi @yotaka,

Absolutely no problem, glad to “kinda” help out but we’re here whenever you need assistance with Wordfence so nothing is a waste of time. Simply open a new topic the next time you have a question!

    Thanks again,

    Peter.
