Load slides as background images

I found this post, that seems to provide a solution, but was wondering if I could get help understanding where this custom loop is placed, and if this would work for us.

The images need to load as a background image to a specified div.
Each slide show will display inside the same div, but on different pages of the site.Thank you in advance for your assistance!
