All our plugins use both load_textdomain and load_plugin_textdomain as a backup. The reason we do this is so we can place the .mo files outside the plugin and into the regular WordPress language folder so they are not wiped on update.

I installed the plugin you mentioned and it seems to work even though it claims a compatibility error. If you are actually having problems please let me know.
