    Hello,

It looks like WP MAIL SMTP is sending spam from one of my client’s sites.

Received: from 1041778363355 named unknown by gmailapi.google.com with HTTPREST; Mon, 27 Dec 2021 05:05:28 -0800
    Date: Mon, 27 Dec 2021 05:05:28 -0800
From: "[My client's site name tag]" <[WP Mail SMTP from email address]@gmail.com>
    Message-Id: <################ obfuscated #######################@mail.gmail.com>
    X-Mailer: WPMailSMTP/Mailer/gmail 3.2.1
    MIME-Version: 1.0
    Content-Type: text/html; charset=UTF-8
    Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit
    To: [email protected]
Subject: ?? Jamie want to meet you! Click Here: https://bit.ly/3mCkboR?w3y ?? - Your Aging Well Path free download

Dozens of these have come into my email box (the admin address).
How do I know if more are going out to other people from this client’s site?

    How do we stop this?
And how do we send legit email from the site then?

    Thank you.

    Chris

    And it continues.

Now the site is sending me messages like this:

from:	Mail Delivery Subsystem <[email protected]>
to:	[my gmail address on the Google Applications for WP MAIL SMTP]@gmail.com
    date:	Dec 27, 2021, 6:25 PM
    subject:	Delivery Status Notification (Failure)
    mailed-by:	mail-sor-f69.google.com

    Address not found
Your message wasn’t delivered to [email protected] because the domain loodusring.eewww.loodusring.eetelefo couldn’t be found. Check for typos or unnecessary spaces and try again.

So, it *SEEMS* since we acctivated WP Mail SMTP our site and WP Mail SMTP are being used a aspam relay system.

I AM DEACTIVATNG WP MAIL SMTP TO AVOID OUR DOMAIN AND IP ADDRESS BEING BLACK LISTED.

Anybody here know how to stop this?

All good. WP Mail SMTP is now deactivated.

Time to find an SMTP plugin that won’t send spam from the site.

    Thank you for the support.

    Chris

    Hi @anotheropus,

I apologize for any confusion. WP Mail SMTP does not send any emails by itself apart from the test email. It routes all the emails sent from your site by other plugins, themes, or custom code snippets through the SMTP provider you’ve configured.

Such spam emails can be sent from the comments or forms on your site. Once you deactivate the WP Mail SMTP plugin, you might not receive spam emails but you’ll also face issues with genuine emails. The best way is to use spam prevention techniques in your comment box or forms.

To find out the source sending the spam email, please reactivate the WP Mail SMTP plugin. Go to WP Mail SMTP > Tools > Debug Event and then check “Debug Email Sending”. Once you receive such spam emails once again, visit the debug Event Page once again, and you can see the source sending the spam email. Here’s a screenshot for reference.

    I hope this helps!

Hi @anotheropus – we haven’t heard from you in about a week, so I’m going to go ahead and mark this ticket resolved. If you still have questions, though, please feel welcome to continue the conversation.
