    Hi,
is there any way to host Google Fonts locally with Stories? There are currently problems in Germany when the fonts are accessed via Google. Local saving or storing it would be optimal. This works properly with locally stored fonts on the website, unfortunately not with stories.

    Regards
    Michael

    Hi Michael

While we don’t have a built-in way for automatically hosting all Google Fonts locally, you can upload your custom font files (including ones from Google Fonts) on the Settings page.

We are also looking into ways to disable (remote) Google Fonts completely for users who prefer that option.

Aside: for completeness, just linking to this FAQ entry regarding privacy + Google Fonts

    Hi Pascal,

the problem is, that lawyers in Germany are currently warning owners of websites to pay a fee after a judgment by the Munich Regional Court (LG München, Urteil vom 19.01.2022, Az. 3 O 17493/20), if they integrate Google Fonts.

Stories is a great plugin in WordPress that we use massively ourselves, but sending data directly to Google Fonts has become a legal issue against us. This primarily affects website operators in Germany and Austria.

Unfortunately, upload font files (including ones from Google Fonts) on the Settings page does not solve the problem with existing stories, which would then all have to be revised again by hand. Fonts already used in existing stories are not replaced by the locally saved and integrated version.

Indeed uploading font files would not help for existing stories (unless you go edit them manually). I created a ticket for us to look into making this easier.

I was hoping that a plugin like https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/host-webfonts-local/ would just work for this use case, but unfortunately it does not (yet) support stories.

For now I’d recommend trying plugins like that for locally hosting Google Fonts, and reaching out to these plugins in case they don’t support Web Stories yet.

This way we don’t have to reinvent the wheel ??

Thanks for the work. You are doing a great job and I think Google Stories is a great extension for WordPress.

Thanks a lot for these kind words, Michael! (Dankesch?n!)

We always strive to make the plugin and Web Stories in general better, so if there’s anything else you’d like to share, please let me know.

Otherwise, it would really make my day if you could leave a short plugin review.
