• Hello,

As the title suggest I am locally hosting wordpress in a virtual machine using virtual box

    I have the following problem:

Recently I have purchased a domain name from godaddy and I want to attach it to my site.

In the godaddy site I have tried forwarding by entering the public ip of my router but this does not work. It goes to the login screen of my router.

My vm does not have a public ip address, only a private one 192.168.1.13 so this does not work with forwarding either.

Note: I have configure the vm with a bridged adapter

Do I have to configure the vm with a public ip?

    Any help greatly appreciated

    Thanks in advance

  • Your VM must have a public IP to be accessible from anywhere outside your local network. If you want it accessible to the outside world, you’ll also need a static IP from your ISP.

Firstly this is not a good idea, just about nobody does their own hosting. The security and uptime obligations are excessive. When considered in the scope of expenses, hosting is cheap.
If you really want to proceed then you will want to set port forwarding on your modem/router. Easiest if you have a static IP for your connection, though maybe a dynamic IP solution can work. Then you will have to configure your VM to have its Virtual Network adapter respond to a nominated IP on your LAN so that the router can forward to it.

Hi thank you for your response

I will give port forwarding a try. Though the static IP can be an issue, I assume I have to ask my isp for that.
