The EM location search bar on my website is not working for any location names that include apostrophes. For example, if you search for St. Katharine’s it comes up with a message saying ‘Sorry, no locations can be found’. Again, if you search for St. Katharines without the apostrophe it also comes up with the no locations found message. However, if you search for St. Katharine without the apostrophe or ‘s’ it finds the correct location result. Is there a fix that can be made to the location search bar to allow apostrophes to work or just be ignored entirely?

I would also like other similar searches such as Saint Katharine or St Katharine without the full stop (period) or any punctuation to also find the St. Katharine’s location page result as well. Is there a way of adding variations to the search terms to help the locations be found more easily?

    Thanks

  • Which version of Events Manager do you have?

    I’m using version 5.5.3.1

Can you upgrade to the latest version? I have a feeling there was bug fix relating to this a couple of versions ago. I’m certainly not able to replicate the issue using version 5.5.5.

Thanks for your help. I have updated the plugin and this has fixed the problem with the search not working with apostrophes.

However I have tested the search function and the location isn’t found if you remove the punctuation altogether and simply write St Katharine (removing the full stop and apostrophe from St. Katharine’s). Is there a way round this so the search doesn’t have to be written exactly as the location title is published? Could I write variations on the name as keywords or tags to improve the searchability, for example?

You’d need to write some custom to do that.

One system that’s often used is using an auto-complete function that shows suggestions after the first couple of characters have been typed. There are a couple of WordPress plugins that can add auto-complete to the standard search box – you might be able to use them on other fields too.

If you’re feeling adventurous, you can even take a look at:

Ok thanks that’s good advice! I’ll look into adding this function to the website.
