Hi, I use Wordfence free version on the site https://brightpropertymanagement.com

Yesterday, I noticed that the Wordfence plugin has been updated. I use ManageWP to update most plugins and themes so I didn’t login to the site.

Today, I received an email from Jetpack stating that my site was down. I reproduce salient extract below:

Your site is responding intermittently, or extremely slowly. This can indicate an overloaded, under-powered, or misconfigured server. Your site is probably loading for some users, but not for everyone. Error reference: 152774836/intermittent

    Jetpack email

I tried to load the site but it would not load. I then tried to login to the admin site and received a page stating “Your access to this site has been temporarily limited by the site owner”. I am the the owner and did no such thing. It further states that this is in response to an HTTP 503. If that is the case then the error message is at best misleading.

I used the email box to get the unlock mail but nothing has been received for 30 minutes. However, after receiving this message, I retried the home page and that loaded fine. So 503??.

So, I tried the admin page again and got the same 503 response.

Just now, Jetpack has reported that the site is back up. So, essentially no 503 situation but your screen states explicitly that this is the reason

    So, questions:

    • Were there any issues with the update/upgrade yesterday?
    • If not why does it lock me out BEFORE any attempt to sign in and claim that it is because my access has been blocked. How can it know? Unless an IP check and I never barred my own IP
    • What does “temporarily” mean in this case “Your access to this service has been temporarily limited.
    • Why does the email to unblock not work? And so, how do I get back into my site.
    • What is causing wordfence to report a 503 when evidently, that is not the case.

I attach the screenshot of the page displayed when I wish to login. I can confirm that this is the same display while there was a loading problem AND when that problem had been rectified.

    Many Thanks

Hi, I can report some progress. Soon after I posted, an unlock email arrived. I clicked the link and was able to login. I was expecting to have to unlock something or mark a blocked userid/ip/whatever as OK, but there were no clear instructions. So, I didn’t do anything.

I then tried to login without using the special link and I was successful. So, can you confirm that the issue is resolved once you have logged in with the link?

I asked my hosts to review the logs and I reproduce below. There seem to be issues with wordfence SQL?

[26-Oct-2023 07:29:16 UTC] WordPress database error MySQL server has gone away for query SELECT name, val, autoload FROM scd_bpm_wfconfig WHERE name = 'needsGeoIPSync' made by require('wp-blog-header.php'), require_once('wp-load.php'), require_once('wp-config.php'), require_once('wp-settings.php'), do_action('plugins_loaded'), WP_Hook->do_action, WP_Hook->apply_filters, wordfence::veryFirstAction, wfConfig::get

Can you please get back to me on this.

Hi @andyward75, thanks for updating us with the progress after the last topic.

We can certainly try to provide more information regarding your other questions above, but I can say that the MySQL server has gone away error usually suggests that the database server is restarting or possibly crashing and starting up again automatically. This therefore could be a knock-on effect for other issues you were experiencing accessing the site, so may not be a cause that needs to be looked into further if the MySQL issue is resolved.

Running out of memory can be a cause for this happening. If the database server is crashing or running out of memory, your server admin or host should be able to diagnose and resolve the problem for you. This can be a problem with sites on shared servers where another site is to blame for the loss of memory affecting yours, but is not limited to that kind of setup. The server logs referenced for the error could provide some insight into what precisely caused the database issue.

    Thanks,
    Peter.
