Hi, I am having trouble logging into my WordPress site. It’s not something I do very often and this is the first time I have tried to login in about a year.

When I try and login I get the error “Login failed because your IP address has been blocked”.

    My site is https://www.linga-chalet.co.uk.

Any help would be very much appreciated. Thanks

  • Hi Steve, after a quick check, it seems that on your website is installed a plugin that limits the failed login attempts to just 1.

Basically if you don’t type your username and password right at the first attempt, WordPress prevents you from attempting again for a few minutes (that what it means when it says “your IP address has been blocked”).

Instead of keep trying to guess your password, if you don’t remember it, I suggest that you reset it using your “lost password” link
    https://www.linga-chalet.co.uk/wp-login.php?action=lostpassword

Once you reset your password you’ll be able to login again, but remember to type it right at the first attempt, or you’ll be blocked again for a few minutes.

    Hope it helps:)

    Hey Steve,

Temporarily, you can access your website immediately by disabling the applicable plugin folder (rename it to something it temporarily) via FTP or Hosting File Manager. Then, the block will not be applicable. Login accordingly, or reset password via link or MySQL database.

Hope that guides you in the right direction.

Yeah +1 FTP or SSH, quite amazed the number of people being blocked by poorly tested plugins,

quite amazed the number of people being blocked by poorly tested plugins,

Lack of familiarity with plugin configuration has been a more common reason in my experience. Sometimes folks don’t take the time to read (or completely understand) all of the documentation and instructions. In this case, @stevemackenzie100 appears to be using the All In One WP Security & Firewall (version 3.0). I’m not sure I could lump that plugin into a “poorly tested” category. ??

@stevemackenzie100 – How to recover from a lockout can be found in their FAQ. https://www.tipsandtricks-hq.com/wordpress-security-and-firewall-plugin

@claytonjames Agreed, people don’t take time to read online or offline docs or FAQ in general, which leads to many unexpected issues :/

I guess the best way is to make videos nowadays… preparing my first one.

Hi, thanks for the advice but I’m really struggling to get logged in.

I’ve tried to reset my password for the admin account for the site several times but each time I reset it, when I try to log in straightaway I get the same error as before, Login failed because your IP address has been blocked.

Can anyone give me some advice on how to resolve this? Thanks.

Hi Steve, if you’re not able to login after having reset the password, then you should try to disable the plugin that is blocking you, via FTP or via the File manager in your web hosting panel, as the others suggest.

To temporarily disable a single plugin it’s enough that you rename the folder that contains it. Look for “All In One WP Security & Firewall”

Otherwise the quickest way is to temporarily disable all plugins as explained here
    https://www.wpbeginner.com/plugins/how-to-deactivate-all-plugins-when-not-able-to-access-wp-admin/

Then try again to login again and let us know how it goes

Hi, thanks for the advice. The website I am trying to access is my Dad’s, which was developed by a third party. Neither me nor my Dad know anything about how the site is hosted. Is there any other way around this or would I be best going back to the guy who developed the site?

Hi Steve, yes, if you cannot directly access your website via FTP or web hosting panel, your only chance is to get in touch with the guy who developed it and to ask him to disable that plugin for you. Then try again.

In any case I also suggest you to ask for your website FTP credentials, so if you have another emergency like this one, you can try to directly operate via FTP (but be always very careful when you do that, because you can compromise your website if you don’t know what you’re doing).

Hope you manage to fix it
