I have one blog (of several I run successfully) where I have not done an update for over a year, but now need to do so.

I find I am unable to login to the wp-admin, and the lost password / lost user ID function doesn’t seem to recognise any of my user ID’s or my email. So, I am unable to add new content or even update sw or access back-ups, etc.

    Any suggestions?

    1. Log into your webhost’s control panel
    2. Find phpMyAdmin and open it
    3. Open your website’s database
    4. Click on “wp_users” and you’ll see a list of all users with their email addresses.

OK, thanks I see the problem – I’ve been hacked – many mysterious users. The lone user that was my admin user, has password and email that don’t work for me …. so, can I juts delete the rogue users, and edit my own details at the DB level?

In fact I should add – the “wp_users” table (like all tables in this DB) now renamed “wp_lkemwt_users”

I wouldn’t worry about the table name, it can vary by installation. If you used your web host’s one click WordPress install, for example, it would create weird looking prefixes like that.

What you should do is delete all users that you don’t recognize, but do NOT delete your original admin user.

Is the email address listed for the admin user still correct? If it’s not, update it and then try the forgot my password feature again to reset your password.

Phew, I’m in! Thanks for your help. I know enough phpMySQL to be dangerous. (I shall now do all WP updates …. before I do anything else.) Many thanks for your help.

And all updates executed OK, and dashboard / post-editing all functioning. Thanks again.
