• I am a contributor to a WordPress-based site, physicsworld.com, and I have a recurring problem when trying to login.

Even though I am DEFINITELY typing in the correct username and password I get the error message that the details are incorrect. The only way I have found to solve it is to reset my password by email, which I must have done 100s of times by now.

I’ve tried clearing the history and cache, and using multiple browsers, but the problem persists. I am using a MacBook Pro and Safari is my default browser.

The trouble is that I am one of multiple contributors to the site where none of us have unlimited admin rights for the WordPress tool. Nobody else experiences this problem apart from me.

So could this be a local problem with my browser settings?

  • Hi,

Is resetting the password not working?

Have to tried to contact the admin of the website?

Resetting the password works, and I can access the site without problem for a day or so. But then I have the same problem again, so I end up resetting the password pretty much every day – obviously annoying and time-consuming.

I’ve contacted the site admin and they can’t see any issue on their side of things. And as I mentioned, no other users are experiencing the same problem, which makes me think it’s a local issue for me.

Does the site use any kind of security plugin? I was thinking that perhaps some kind of bot (or if you’ve got some kind of gadget, perhaps you’re using a mobile app?) that’s remembering an old password, then you may be trying to log in too many times with an incorrect password (or a bot somewhere is trying to guess your password…)

Also does this happen just to your login for that WordPress site or all of the logins?

    Thanks for suggestions.

It only happens for this WordPress site, as I regularly login to plenty of other sites without problem.

I’m not using a mobile app, just Safari or Chrome on my Mac. I’ve tried typing the password manually, copy and pasting it, and using the password stored KeyChain. I double check that it is the correct password I.e. it hasn’t reverted to an old password in the login box.

So once I reset the password via email, it’s usually fine for most of the day. During that time, I can even log out and back in again without problem.

But then I come back to login the next day and I’m told I’ve entered the wrong details. Reset. Go again.

That’s kind of an odd problem… If you are not the admin there at that site then maybe you need to take this question up with the owners or admins.

It might be some part of their system doing something to certain other contributor level users besides you and they may not even be aware of the issue.

I do respect your patience and dedication to that site where you need to go through this ongoing ‘headache’ to remain active there.

It may be that the admins there might need to look at your account and situation in order to lock in a password or something.

My concern is this problem may be discouraging others.

Imagine those people there having weekly meetings about the ‘new contributors’ who drop in for a few days then never return. And one tech guy asking about the huge load of ‘password reset’ emails which the committee back burners as that system works but the ‘retention problem’ keeps nagging away.

Those people may be sitting in ‘mid forest’ but missing those trees completely.

Complaints are a pain but they often wake up the ‘powers that be’ to the realities they don’t see.

Thanks @jnashhawkins, that’s exactly the situation I’m in. The problem was raised with the site admin about 5 months ago, but has been lost in some opaque pipeline of – understandably – more important issues.

I’ll try raising it with them again, but I fear I will be stuck in password reset land for at least another 5 months. Hey ho, I tried.

Yeah, just keep raising the issue then.

Maybe this time you might even mention this thread.

They might even need a bit of help with the problem once they recognize it.
