• hello, I started developing my website with Twenty Seventeen theme a couple weeks ago. I am new to WP so I’m like a bull in a china shop.

When the theme was freshly installed I placed a logo file “cropped-logo7_250_by_91_pixels.bmp” in the theme. Now, when I run checks on the site, I find this file size is way too large (600 kB) and also not the correct file type (.bmp should have been .png).

Now, after installing/uninstalling many plug-ins (and debugging gallery issues), my original Twenty Seventeen theme install looks nothing like it used to.

There used to be a page (appearances, header, widget? which menu) where I could see where the logo file was installed but I can’t seem to find this any more? Appearances and Customize all looks different…I must’ve really stomped on some code or ran into plug-in incompatibilities? I’ve run through all possible menus about ten times and do not see where I can access this file anymore…hope I haven’t broken things beyond repair.

The problem at hand for me right now is to try to find where this file is in the WP environment so that I can change it to a smaller file size and a correct file type.

    Can anybody help me here?

    Thanks much, Mark

  • The first question is: has all this change been done asChild Theme?

If not, then I would recommend going back and reinstalling the theme. As you suspect, if you have been making changes to the TwentySeventeen Theme itself you may have “broken things beyond repair”. By using a Child Theme you can always return to the Theme and start again with a new Child Theme.

The installations of many plug-ins may also have affected how the theme works. Somehow they may have conflicted with each other and caused problems.

Being able to return to the pristine Theme could help in tracking down where things with your own code have gone wrong.

These are all considerations before I turned to your linked page. Unfortunately, I found your 404 page.

The error of the bmp instead of a png is something that happened when you uploaded the file. How you were creating the file, etc, may have something to do with it. Do you have a bmp file of the same name as the png file? It may have been a simple operator error (picking the wrong file).

You need to go to Appearances > Customize > Header Media to find your header image (the plant and vase of the Theme).

Your logo is under Appearance > Customize > Site Identity. The size of your logo file will depend on how you created your file, resolution and finished size.

    I hope this helps.

    Thanks much,

You know I did eventually “find” the file…I found it in “Media, Library” and chose the “List” mode for displaying the files…in the list mode it was apparent there was a ” – Logo” at the end of the filename (“- Logo” was assigned by the theme).

I then replaced the .bmp file with a .png version and voila! all my menus returned to how I remember them…so, it really was the theme not liking that .bmp file style.

I’m back in business. Thanks for your input, Mark
