I am using a very old version of wordpress. And the reason is simple.

the last time I updated it, the results were disastrous. My site was down for days while I had to reconstruct it.

I do NOT want that to happen again.

how can i avoid this while making my version of wordpress current?

1. Backup your database.

2. Deactivate all plugins.

3. Switch to the default theme.

4. Carry out a series of smaller upgrades: 2.3.3 -> 2.5 -> 2.7 -> 2.9 -> 3.0. Make a new database backup after every successful upgrade step.

and so….what happens if I just stay a 2.3.3? I’m running it standlone in WordPress, and it does everything I want/need. The process you outlined sounds like a LOT of effort and potential for grief.

Old WordPres versions are very prone to being hacked. WordPress upgrades usually include security updates which keep your blog safe.

Trust me, its much easier to upgrade WordPress than it is to clean up a spammy/hacked site.

The newer WordPress versions allow you to upgrade WordPress in the dashboard, so this will be the last time you need to do it.

Hmmm. OK< I guess Its time for me to really do this. I was given this instrution:

But i have no idea how to back up my database. Or to even begin executing the upgrades. Is there an stp by step guide to help me with this?
