Longer plain text

When storing plain text in a pod, you can use field type ‘Plain Text’. However, this field type is restricted in length (it seems).

Is there a way to store plain text with a length of (for example) 400 characters in a pod field?

I know there are paragraph field types, like ‘Plain Paragraph Text’. These field types can store a longer text, but this text will automatically be enclosed by paragraph tags (<p></p>), which is unwanted in my page layout.

So: is there a way to store longer texts in a pod field without having paragraph tags automatically added?
