longer title, shorter menu entry–how??

  • I’m wanting to give my pages multi-word titles, but to represent those pages on the menu with short titles.

    I’ve been looking at the Menus function (Admin > Appearance > Menus) and specifically at “Navigation Label” “Title Attribute” and “Original.” If I put a longer title on one of my pages and then come back to Menus and put the short title even under ALL THREE of these (and as the slug besides), the menu insists on putting up the full title as given on the page.

    Is this function not yet functional, or am I missing something??? Please advise.

    (Somehow, my “home” page is letting me do that, but none of the others are. “Home” seems to be different: menu ORDERING is overridden somewhere for that page, too!)

  • Are you using something similar to the twentyten theme? I find the menus screen to be very confusing. There is a “Save Menu” button in the box where you change the title. Are you hitting that after?

    Maybe if you tell us know which theme you are using and your URL.

    I’m using a child theme of Twenty Ten–little altered beyond the CSS. Yes, I am hitting the Save Menu after entering my short title everywhere. Nothing changes the menu title besides changing the actual page title.
