Looking for a theme with an automatic secondary nav menu

I’m trying to find a free theme that will allow me to create a website with an automatic navigation system something like this. That is, a primary menu along the top and a secondary menu of subpages down the left (or right) column. [Drop-down menus along the top (as in the example) would be nice but are not essential.] I would, however, prefer a simple, light design (like ‘Twenty Twelve’). I have just been searching for a number of hours for such a theme, without success. The closest thing I found was a page of instructions on how to modify the functions.php file of ‘Twenty Ten’ to create a secondary menu, but I’m not actually sure that would do what I want. Surely what I’m looking for is not that unusual, is it? Thanks in advance for any help.
