    Hi Guys,

I am basically looking for some wordpress templates to use for my schools students’ union. I am looking for a nice repository of themes for websites not blogs, which ideally are free too. Do you know any good ones? Because most of what I’ve found are blog templates.

  • Themes are just…themes. It’s how you use them that counts. Try looking searching on “wordpress cms themes”.

Thanks, I will look into that then ??

WordPress is first and foremost a blog tool, however with page templates you can create Website Only Themes. Ive created several in the past, only used the posts for sections like news.

As for Website Only Themes, they exist, most tend to be tailored toward the blog style though I’ve seen. If you are savvy at CSS/HTML maybe a little PHP you can always build a theme yourself.

Oh and don’t forget to check with whoever is in-charge of Web Technologies, to look into Website Accessibility Rules.

What makes a Theme specifically a “blog” Theme, rather than a “website” Theme?

Having the posts, archive files (ordered by month), comments, tags, and these kind of things which I don’t need in this case.

Those elements only appear on the blog posts index page (index.php or home.php), blog post archive pages (archive.php, category.php, tag.php, etc.), and single blog posts (single.php).

All Themes include a “page.php” template file that outputs static Page content.

But these themes will still have a navigation menu for blog posts categories (not just pages) and I would still have the Monthly Archive thing in most pages.

This is an example of the one I use personally: https://www.ryansammut.com/?page_id=13

Not necessarily. At least 1 of my free themes doesn’t. Plus you can customise sidebars with widgets.

You don’t have to include any of those things in your site. Any current Theme supports core Navigation Menus, which allows you to specify exactly what you want to appear in the navigation menu. Likewise, pretty much any Theme supports the core Widgets feature, which allows you to customize the sidebar content to display exactly what you want to appear.

You’re using the Motion Theme, which I know supports all of the above.

Yes I know, I gave an example with Motion Theme to show what is still there which I wouldn’t need.

So the best option would be to find any theme which would allow widgets and ideally without the navigation menu for blog posts, and I should be fine.

No, you do want a Theme that supports the core Navigation Menu feature, so that you can include only/exactly what you want in the menu.

What I meant is the category things, because usually such themes have 2 menu’s, I need 1 with just 1 menu. Is this right?

Most Themes generally only have one header navigation menu. Motion is the exception, in that it provides two such menus.

Oh ok, thanks a lot Mr. Chip Bennett. Was fruitful talking to you.

    Glad to help!
