I started down the path of custom development. WordPress friend suggests buddypress can be used instead. Need an expert advisor on buddypress to confirm against requirements. Basically, people post their thoughts re. a central question/problem and rate e/o’s submissions. If you know how to solve for this, please let me know.

Based on the info you provided, I believe buddypress can do what you want. That said, you’d install buddypress as a wordpress plugin (you don’t use buddypress ‘instead’ of wordpress).

Here’s where you can learn more about buddypress.

Thanks Gabe. But do you know how I can access a human being that i can discuss this with? I’m not a technical person and need to reach a conclusion as I am at a fork in the road – custom vs. wordpress…
It seems these forums only lead to links with more info than I can digest. Are you a consultant in this space?

Are you looking for us to forward you onto something like https://jobs.wordpress.net/ or https://directory.codepoet.com/ ?

That’s better than asking whether human beings responding to this forum thread are qualified enough to help you.

@mabec, I run my own sites but I do not provide consulting services. What Andrew shared should be enough to get you started in finding someone who may be able to help you. Best of luck!

Also that sort of solicitation is frowned upon here. *Waves at Andrew*

@mabec Could be that the BuddyPress plugin may be overkill for a site where “people (can) post their thoughts re. a central question/problem and rate e/o’s submissions.” In addition, BP doesn’t have that kind of setting/rating in place, so you would have to create/purchase a plugin for that.

So if you only need those basic functions of posting and upvoting etc., there are free and premium question/answer/rating plugins listed in this post.

@mabec You’re welcome. Just to let you know that there’s a new WP voting plugin compatible with BuddyPress if you do want to create an online community, https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/voter-plugin/
