• In WP version 3.9 there is a problem on all my sites when trying to test another theme via the Appearance / Themes feature.

I find that when I come back to the original theme as normal, I have lost my widgets to the inactive list and then have to push them to the sidebar one by one.

This has happened to me on a variety of themes and I am not keen on testing themes any more until this problem is fixed.
In fact I was about to change my theme and now I have to put everything on hold.

  • Can you replicate the problem using the default Twenty Fourteen theme with all plugins deactivated?

    Hi esmi,
I have tried that as you said. I am using Twenty Fourteen theme. I have some widgets on the sidebar and some widgets in the footer.

    – Firstly I have de-activated all plugins.
    – Then went to Appearance / Themes
    – Selected Espressionista theme which is installed but not active
    – That took me to the Customise theme screen where I just tried changing the colors but nothing else.
    – Then, without saving the Espressionista theme I hit the ‘close’ button on the top left corner and did not activate this theme.

As a result, I have lost my widgets at the bottom and in the footer. This I guess could be because Espressionista theme doesn’t have a footer widget area.

So yes, it fails with Twenty Fourteen theme and all plugins disabled. I can recreate.
