    Hello.

we forgot to renew our domain this year and consequently have lost the domain name but it also appears we cannot gain access to the website with wp-admin in the address bar :-(.

does this mean we have completely lost the site and have to start again? or is there a way of accessing it and changing the domain name within it?

who is the company that you are paying to host your website? the area that you need to access in the webhosting account is PHPMYADMIN. contact the support team of your webhosting account to get guidance to find that area.
when you get access to PHPMYADMIN area you can use the directions provided using this link: https://www.ads-software.com/support/article/changing-the-site-url/

if you will be using a new domain name for your website, there will be several additional steps to take to change all instances of the old to new domain name.
you might need to use a plugin like “Better Search Replace”.

*make a FULL BACKUP COPY of all files and the database before making any changes*

No, the real problem is you didn’t read the official support article I gave you (which Lisa also gave you) ??

… as the article offers 4 additional ways to change the address: by editing the site’s wp-config.php file, editing the theme’s functions.php file, changing the address directly in the database, and using the command line utility wp-cli. And none of these requires opening the site in the browser!
