  • That is totally legit. Her site is fine. You really need to be careful about what you say is “malicous”. If you don’t know what it is your looking at your better off not saying anything rather than upsetting and scaring people.

    In general, themes should not have any reason to use base64 encoding. Any theme that does should be treated with the greatest suspicion. So, in this respect, Krishna was correct to sound a warning. As it is, the site uses a commercial theme and therefore all support requests should be directed to the theme’s vendor rather than here.

    Esmi – Not sure I can query the vendor. My web designer is their member, not me.

    @steffercat,
    Maybe, but something goes wrong, we have to check everything. I asked you to check your theme with TAC (please read above). If you checked it and found nothing wrong with the theme, we rule out the possibility and look for clues elsewhere. However, you did not seem to check it.

    @cjchamberland,
    Can Base64 be used to hide malicious code? If it can be used what is wrong in my asking her to check what looks like malicious code. Now can you tell me why a lot of Base64 are associated with her files? Can you locate them?

    Even at this moment they are there. Her site is having problems. If such suspicious codes are found they have to be investigated first. If you are in my position will you do that or not?

    I’m sorry but there’s nothing we can do about that other than to suggest you contact your web designer. We do not support commercial themes as you paid for support when you bought the theme. It is not our place to keep theme vendors in business or deprive them of any income that they may derive from support services.

    Krishna – YOU can check any base64 code you find yourself before posting on the forums that it’s “malicous”. It is used regularly to hide malicous code but it DOES server other purposes, such as in her case where its being used to compress images to make the site load faster.

    I don’t recommend it being used, but some developers like to hide their code, which is fine, but don’t automatically scream malcious code. Check it out yourself first, there are plenty of tools to do that and you can do it yourself with php if you know what your doing. Most of these people don’t even understand what you are saying so all you do is cause confusion and panic.

    She was having a problem locating where to set-up her menu, not any issues with security, viruses or malware.

    @cjchamberland: Enough! As I said previously, themes should not have any reason to use base64 encoding. Any theme that does should be treated with the greatest suspicion. It is not the responsibility of support forum volunteers to decode out every base64 block that they come across. There are better places to do that. Kirshna was correct to be suspicious. Beyond that, s/he had no other responsibility.

    @esmi – sorry I was just responding to his questions. Didn’t mean to overstep any boundries.
