• I cannot get to my website. I get all sorts of messages. I know the site is still in the database of WordPress. How can I get to it ?

    Sorry –here is my latest message. Fatal error: Call to undefined function: wp() in /home/portfood/public_html/portfood/wp-blog-header.php on line 18
    It seems like when I fix one I get another.
    The website is https://www.asianantique.biz

    Here is today’s message:
    Fatal error: Call to undefined function: suppress_errors() in /home/portfood/public_html/portfood/wp-includes/functions.php on line 962

    Before you started getting errors, what had you been doing? Upgrading WordPress? Installing a new plugin?

    I did upgrade WordPress. I thought I dd it right but I guess not.
    It’s funny because I have two add-on sites there and one works and the other doesn’t. Thanks for the response.

    “undefined function” – always means the same user error: files not uploaded or not uploaded completely.

    Upload your wp-includes folder again, or better, a fresh copy of it.

    Now that is where I believe I have a problem. I had someone start this site for me and there are no back-ups to go to. Are wp-includes folders generic where I can get a copy ? I guess by now you can tell I’m a newbie.

    Quote from you:

    I did upgrade WordPress.

    How the heck did you upgrade if you do not have a copy of WP on your computer?

    In my infinite wisdom ( NOT ) I just downloaded it from WordPress https://www.ads-software.com/download/ I know don’t tell me I am not very bright.

    Weell, that’s exactly where you should get it. Inside the WP package there is a directory: wp-includes.

    Now, when you upgrade, you should delete certain existing files and folders. This ensures that you get clean copies of the new files. So that you don’t get those errors.

    Pay particular attention to STEP #7 below. It’s essential to a happy upgrade.
    https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Upgrading_WordPress_Extended#Step_13:_Add_the_SECRET_KEY_definition_to_wp-config.php

    Just to save you from having to scroll (that’s a long and complex article), I’ll post Step 7 here for you, that’s how important I think it is.

    Step 7: Delete the old WordPress files

    Why Delete? Generally, it is a good idea to delete whatever is possible because the uploading (or upgrading through cPanel) process may not correctly overwrite an existing file and that may cause problems later.

    DO NOT DELETE these folders and files:

    * wp-config.php file;
    * wp-content folder;
    * wp-images folder–only older installations from 1.5.x days will have this folder;
    * wp-includes/languages/ folder–if you are using a language file, and it is here rather than in wp-content/languages/, do not delete this folder (you might want to move your language files to wp-content/languages/ for easier upgrading in the future);.
    * .htaccess file–if you have added custom rules to your .htaccess, do not delete it;
    * Custom Content and/or Plugins–if you have any images or other custom content or Plugins inside the wp-content folder, do NOT delete them.

    Delete these Files and Folders:

    * wp-* (except for those above), readme.html, wp.php, xmlrpc.php, and license.txt; files; Typically files in your root or wordpress folder. Again, don’t delete the wp-config.php file.
    * wp-admin folder;
    * wp-includes folder; If you have a language file here, remember not to delete the wp-includes/languages/ folder
    * wp-content/cache folder; You only see this folder if you are upgrading FROM WordPress 2.0.
    * wp-content/plugins/widgets folder; You only see this folder if you previously installed the Sidebar Widgets plugin. The Sidebar Widgets code conflicts with the built-in widget ability.

    jonimueller.

    Thanks for the great amount of help. But so I don’t mess it up again.
    Can I delete those files after upgrading ? Will the upgrade install those files again ? After deleting the files that the directions say to do I just hit the download button again ? Being new to WordPress this makes me very nervous. I would try to do just the wp-includes file but I don’t know if that would be enough. One more thing do I delete those files from my main website or the add-on I have trouble with ?

    I think I need to pay someone to do it. Makes me crazy.

    I don’t think you understand what you are doing or the difference between installing and upgrading.

    You are upgrading an existing install. You are not reinstalling. When you download, you download the latest version of WP. That’s 2.5.1.

    Follow those DIRECTIONS, they aren’t hard. Delete only the files and folders you are told to delete.

    THEN upload WP. Then to finish the upgrade, point your browser to the upgrade script.

    Then that’s it. Relax. You won’t need to upgrade again until WP comes out with a new version.
