    We’re not sure where to begin with this and have been down many avenues.

    • We moved a domain from one server in the USA to another server in Germany and lost all of our SEO, despite the results still being indexed
    • We then consulted with an SEO export in the game since 1994, a very well known SEO guy who did an audit and let us know that a move of servers should not affect the SEO so severely.
    • He did however bring up the Google Core Quality Rank change which he believes is a major contributor to the loss of the SEO
    • We then found that the Follow Up Email plugin was conflicting with the Yoast plugin. Switching it off caused Yoast to then work but she says all her keywords are now lost.
    • We also found that the XML sitemap, once we logged into Google Webmaster Tools was breaking which was caused apparently by a whitespace problem
    • We have no idea where this whitespace might come from and since implemented a script that strips white spaces anywhere in the code.
    • This has fixed the problem of the broken Sitemap

    I guess my main question is, How can the conflict of Follow Up Email have stripped out all the keywords from Yoast and is there a possibility that these still exist somewhere in the DB?

  • This seems to be very specific to your website. The SEO data may or may not be somewhere in the database still. Or maybe you’re able to restore (parts of) the backup from before the move.

    Hi Joost,

    What’s going on with the meta descriptions for previous published posts (using the old version 2 of your plugin)? I noticed the updated plugin seems to have deleted all my meta descriptions and Google is now just running with the first paragraph from the post as the meta description instead!

    Surely this new update to the plugin hasn’t deleted all the previous meta descriptions!? I speak hour upon hour writing those out for previous posts! Talking 100s of posts here!

    Is there anyway to get them back!?

    That plugin update is riddled with bugs. Just today, we’ve been doing more tests and still many of the bugs are causing issues in other sites.

    This has caused us hours and hours of lost work. Work we could have/should been doing on other client’s work.

    You did not even bother to point me to this blog post!

    Our plugin never, seriously, never, delete post metadata. The functions for that just don’t exist in the plugin. So no, it’s not a problem in our plugin, something else has gone wrong. We didn’t change the naming or anything else. Chances are pretty big that Taco is right and indeed, you’ll find all the data in your database.

    Today we updated to the latest version of Yoast and the Meta Descriptions for the pages seem to be back but the WooCommerce product pages all have their meta descriptions missing. Any feedback on this?

    I have also spoken to two SEO specialists in South Africa now and both have confirmed that the move that we have made (as we have done hundreds of times before) should not have affected us this badly.

    There are now only a few scenarios left.

    1. Google applied this algorithm on the 9th of Jan (https://www.rankranger.com/google-algorithm-updates) and we were affected on the 8th of Feb when we moved the domain.
    2. The broken Yoast 3.0 update affected all the meta descriptions and Google’s confused by this massive change.
    3. All of the above?

    I would love to know if more people have been affected because honestly, the only change we made was a server change from WP Engine (in the USA) to Hetzner (in Germany).

    PS:
    What annoyed me possibly the most is that when asking for help on a plugin riddled with bugs, we were asked to pay for support! We have now made it a part of our process to never ever allow plugins to update automatically because this experience has cost us literally thousands of Rands in lost hours.

    I am having the same problem with Follow-Up Emails plugin – it breaks backend like that:

    I’ve tested on latest versions of WordPress and Yoast with no other plugins activated and twenty sixteen fresh theme.

    I’ve updated Yoast with todays release and it is now all fixed.
