Lost Widget Control / Visability

A client asked where to put X into their sidebar, I go load up their Widgets page and see the widgets but on the right where you should see them stacked in use there is nothing. Load the other sidebars/locations and nothing. If I click to add say a text widget to a sidebar it flashes like it is there but it does not show up on the right.

The sidebars are currently active I just have lost control to edit them. Is there a log file for recently updated plugins? There are quite a few on this site and instead of deactivating them all I’d like to be more tactical in this hunt.

Any other ideas / recommendations on what might be at issue?
