Lots of 404 on Google Webmaster Tools

    Hi guys,

    My website has changed a lot over the years. A lot of content has been deleted, but Google Webmaster Tools (apparently) still wants to index these websites, which has resulted in over 80 404 responses on the “Crawl Error” page in Webmaster Tools.

    Does anyone know why this keeps happening? Help on this would be very much appreciated as it is driving me insane.

    Redirect the deleted pages somewhere else.

    Could you please inform me what the most effective way of doing this is? I’m very unsure

    I actually struggle with this annoying issue as well. I don’t understand it because shouldn’t the sitemap update when pages are deleted in wordpress? Or does google just not read the updated sitemap?

    Kevin, you might want to at least do what I do for now, which is a plugin called 404-to-start and directs all 404 errors to the homepage and this will prevent you from having these errors in webmaster tools..and apparently this also helps with SEO but im not an expert on this one.

    I took over a site with 6,000 Google Webmaster Tools URL errors.

    I got rid of them in two days using

    My site is not even a month old and I have already 24 404s. These sites never appeared on the sitemap (which btw is not updated automaticaly). Some aren’t even pages but paths to .xml documents from plugins like the playlist of my mp3-player which google actually showed on serp – so wired!

    In WMT I just found the option “mark as corrected”. That makes the 404s disappear. And if those pages/filepaths don’t exist actually nor on the sitemap and/or are blocked in robots.txt they shouldn’t be coming back again, right?

    Provided you’ve got a post name ‘pattern’ it can be pretty easy.

    What is the OLD url structure? What’s the new one?

    I tend to use .htaccess to redirect and be done with it.
