    Hello.

I am having a lot of general problems with ShortPixel.

I noticed that one of my images has actually grown in size from 35K to 250K. I saw this while looking at my performance through GTMetrix.

Some of my images are now multiplied – as in I uploaded one and see twelve to fifteen copies in the media library.

If I click on an image in the media library, I don’t see any of the ShortPixel settings on the bottom right as you show in your instructions.

I have disabled and re-enabled the plugin already and that did not help. It does seem that something is very wrong.

    My theme is Aveda Phlox.

    Any help is appreciated.

    thanks!

    Hi,
thanks for your message, sorry to hear about these issues ??

It is best to contact us directly here:
    https://shortpixel.com/contact
with the URL of your site and the API Key so we can investigate this.

In the meantime here is what I can say as a general idea:
    1) ShortPixel will not increase the size of an image, if it cannot optimize it further it will just leave it as it is. So there is no way that ShortPixel could have increased the size of an image ??
    2) ShortPixel will only create, free of charge, additional WebP files. The images you’re talking about I believe are thumbnails that are created automatically by WordPress depending on your theme, settings, etc. I believe it is just now that you noticed them.
    3) you need to change Media Library’s view to list view so you can see the option in the right column

That’s all I can do for you now, please contact us directly as specified above and we’ll get back to you with more info.

    Thank you,
    Alex

    Thanks Alex.

I can buy that. Let me try everything you said before I bother you with more direct contact.

The larger image is kind of weird and the name of the file is modified and not what I expected. I will investigate more.

Your hint on getting the shortpixel dialog is probably all I need to track this down.

    thanks!

    Hello.

I have more information about the image that seems to have grown in size.

If I access the web page using a browser with a wide viewport, I am delivered the original file, map.png at 35KB.

If I access the web page using a browser with a narrower viewport, I am delivered another file, map-1024×416.png at 355KB. I presume this has something to do with “thumbnails”.

If I run ShortPixel on the image to optimize the thumbnails, I still end up with a 103KB file.

Should the thumbnails be larger sized than the originals?

I think I have learned something about this.

Wordpress creates the thumbnails before ShortPixel compresses them.
ShortPixel has no influence on the file size of the thumbnails until after it compresses.
Wordpress is creating the thumbnails with larger file sizes than the originals.
    Then ShortPixel compresses them.

I solved the problem by uploading a jpg file instead of a png file and WordPress created thumbnails that are appropriately smaller than the original.

    Hi,
thanks for your follow-up on this, sorry for my slow reply.

Indeed what you described is correct.
Usually is better to JPEG for images/pictures with many colors while it is better to use PNG for (small) logos, icons.

    Regards,
    Alex
